Kenyan company trains and lends to farmers under UN-backed initiative

11 November 2011 – An investment company in Kenya announced today that it will provide some 100,000 smallholder rural farmers – the majority of them women – with access to small loans and basic financial training over the next five years as part of the company’s commitment to a United Nations-backed initiative to alleviate poverty.

FAO project helps Kenyan farmers withstand drought

13 October 2011, Mwingi, Kenya - With the October rainy season starting, FAO is helping more than 5 000 vulnerable farming households in eastern Kenya terrace their fields to conserve rain water for crop use and prevent the soils from being washed away. They are also building simple dams for better harvesting of rain water.

In return for their labour, the farmers receive vouchers that can be redeemed for food as well as building materials for the community-owned dams.

UN chief and Kenyan premier discuss reform, humanitarian situation in Horn of Africa

25 September 2011 –Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Kenya's Prime Minister Raila Odinga have exchanged views on the situation in the Horn of Africa, including the problem of marime piracy off the coast of Somalia, and the food crisis there.

Meeting on Saturday on the margins of the ongoing annual general debate of the General Assembly, Mr. Ban and Mr. Odinga also discussed the implementation of Kenya's new constitution and preparations for next year's general elections.

UNICEF chief arrives in Horn of Africa to boost response to crisis

UN official warns of humanitarian disaster as drought ravages Somalia and Kenya

17 February 2011 – Severe drought in Somalia has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the country with more people becoming internally displaced and others moving into refugee camps across the border in Kenya, as food and water scarcity worsen, the top United Nations humanitarian official said today.

Kenya: UN agency ‘trains trainers’ on curbing disaster risk

25 August 2010 – A United Nations workshop to “train trainers” on disaster risk reduction kicked off today in Kenya with the hope that participants apply the lessons learned elsewhere in Africa.

The two-day training held by the African regional office of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) in Rift Valley Province drew dozens of participants from several African nations.

Based on the feedback from the pilot training, a toolkit will be created to be used in Kenya and beyond.

WASHINGTON, July 27, 2010—The World Bank has approved a credit of US$35 million to help Kenya promote environmentally sustainable management of its coastal and marine resources.

The Kenya Coastal Development Project approved by the World Bank Board of Executive Directors today will also benefit from a US$5 million Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant to strengthen conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity.

Global Food Crisis Grant to Increase Farmers’ Access to Inputs and Improved Technologies - Press Release No:2010/302/AFR

WASHINGTON, March 16, 2010— The World Bank has approved a new emergency grant of €19.3 million to enable Kenya’s smallholder farmers to gain increased access to vital agricultural inputs and improved technologies to boost their output.

The Enhancing Agricultural Productivity Project (EAPP) grant, of about US$28 million equivalent, is financed from the European Union Food Crisis Rapid Response Facility under the World Bank-administered Global Food Crisis Response Program (GFRP).
