North Korea harvest improves - But serious nutrition concerns persist

KATHMANDU (AlertNet) – Around half a million people in Nepal may face extreme hunger in the coming months, as a lack of funds is forcing the United Nations (U.N.) food agency to cut its operations in South Asia's poorest nation, a World Food Programme (WFP) official warned on Tuesday.

UN allocates $41 million to boost aid operations in nine under-funded crises

16 July 2010 – United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes today allocated some $41 million in emergency funding to boost humanitarian operations in nine countries where people are suffering the effects of hunger, malnutrition, disease, and conflict.

The money from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will help cover funding gaps in key humanitarian projects in Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Yemen, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Central African Republic (CAR), Djibouti, Eritrea, Republic of Congo and Nepal.

Humanitarian actors in Chad and the DRC received the largest individual portions of some $8 million apiece.

IFAD signs US$ 7.6 million loan and US$ 7.6 million grant for High-Value Agriculture project in Nepal

Rome, 5 July 2010 – With the goal of reducing poverty and vulnerability of women and men in hill and mountain areas in Nepal, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) signed a new loan agreement of US$7.6 million as well as a grant agreement of $7.6 million.

The loan agreement was signed today in Kathmandu by Lal Shankar Ghimire, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Government of Nepal and Ron Hartman, IFAD Country Programme Manager.

UN political chief arrives in Nepal as appeal for aid is launched

10 March 2010 – The top United Nations political official arrived in Nepal today for a three-day visit to assess the state of the peace process which ended 10 years of fighting between the Government and Maoists.

The visit comes as the peace process that ended the country’s civil war, which claimed some 13,000 lives, remains largely stalled, threatened by tensions and mistrust between Maoists, the Government and the army.

The signing of a peace accord ended the conflict in 2006. After conducting Constituent Assembly elections in May 2008, Nepal abolished its 240-year-old monarchy and declared itself a republic.

30 November 2009 -- Minister for Commerce and Supplies, Rajendra Mahato Sunday attended the Ministerial Meeting of the Commerce Ministers from the Least Developed Countries (LCD) that was held on the sidelines of the 7th Ministerial Conference of World Trade Organisation in Geneva.

The meeting discussed issues of concerns to the LDCs that include Duty Free Quota Free Market Access to all products originating from the LDCs, Special and Differential Treatment, Services Waiver as sectors of early harvesting for LDCs.

Food aid needed in Nepal for thousands hit by flooding and landslides

14 October 2009 – Flooding and landslides triggered by torrential rainfall in the middle and far western regions of Nepal this month have killed 58 people, displaced an estimated 2,600 families and affected over 18,000 more, the United Nations reported today.

“Those affected are in need of food aid,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said. “Access to clean drinking water has also become a problem because of the contamination of water sources. In some areas, it is estimated that between 15 and 40 per cent of the rice crop has been destroyed and a considerable number of livestock lost.”
