World Bank Supports Benin to Improve its Agricultural Productivity and Diversification

WASHINGTON, March 22, 2011-- The World Bank’s Board of Directors today approved a 5-year credit and grant to the Government of Benin in the amount of US$46 million (about FCFA22 billion) for the Agricultural Productivity and DiversificationProject. The financing packageincludes an IDA credit of US$6 million, a US$25 million IDA grant, and a US$15 million grant from the Global Food Crisis Response Program (GFRP).

 

Benin: as waters continue to rise, UN and partners get aid to neediest

2 November 2010 – United Nations agencies and humanitarian organizations are providing critical humanitarian aid to people affected by floods in Benin over the last month, as rainfall continues to swell the Niger River in the north of the West African country.

“Needs are very high because of the floods. We will continue to do everything we can to ensure the response is as quick and effective as it can be,” said the UN Resident Coordinator in Benin, Nardos Bekele-Thomas.

UN emergency flight arrives with aid for flood victims

28 October 2010 – The first flight in a United Nations emergency airlift carrying urgently-needed shelter for victims of Benin’s flood disaster arrived today in the southern city of Cotonou.

The 1,500 tents sent by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) are part of the overall UN response to the floods, which have affected over 700,000 people in the West African nation.

Benin is the country hardest hit by the recent floods that have affected over 1.8 million people in parts of Central and West Africa, and have killed nearly 400 people.

UN mobilizing aid to help flood-stricken Benin

22 October 2010 – The United Nations is mobilizing aid to Benin, where nearly 700,000 people have been affected by severe flooding, with the world body and its partners shortly set to launch a humanitarian appeal to help the flood-stricken in the West African nation.
According to latest assessments, some 680,000 people in 55 of Benin’s 77 municipalities have been affected by the flooding.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported today that water, food and emergency shelter are among the priority needs in flooded areas.

Cholera cases have been reported in some areas, with fears that the epidemic will spread.

Some 1.5 million people hit by floods in West and Central Africa, UN reports

12 October 2010 – Nearly 1.5 million people have been affected by floods and 377 killed in Western and Central Africa, with Chad, Northern Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria facing a serious cholera epidemic, United Nations relief officials reported today.
Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos is due to begin a four-day visit to Nigeria and Niger tomorrow to meet with relief organizations and local authorities as they battle the heavy flooding caused by torrential rains and exceptionally high water levels of the Niger and other rivers.

IMF Executive Board Approves US$109 Million ECF for Benin

June 14, 2010 - The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today approved a new three-year arrangement under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) for a total amount equivalent to SDR 74.28 million (about US$109 million). The approval will enable the first disbursement of an amount equivalent to SDR 10.62 million (about US$15.6 million).

March 26, 2010 -- A mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) led by Joannes Mongardini, visited Cotonou during March 11-26, 2010. The mission held discussions on a program that could be supported by the IMF under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF), and conducted the 2010 Article IV consultation discussions.1 The mission met with the President of the Republic, His Excellency Dr. Thomas Boni Yayi, the Senior Minister for Prospective, Development, Evaluation of Public Policy, and the Coordination of Government Action, Mr. Pascal I. Koupaki, Minister of Economy and Finance, Mr. Idriss L. Daouda, and other senior officials. It also held fruitful discussions with representatives of civil society, labor unions, donors, and the private sector.
