Stabilizing rural Burundi - Agriculture is key to bolstering peace

22 June 2011, Bujumbura - Peace in Burundi can be consolidated by stabilizing the country's rural communities, says FAO. The UN agency is calling for continued support to the most vulnerable farmers, while stressing the need to develop agriculture's economic potential.

Burundi's population is expected to rise from around 8.5 million today to 13 million in 2025. Ensuring local food production for a growing population will be a major challenge, as almost all the country's arable land is already being farmed.

With the consent of the country (or countries) concerned, PINs are issued after Executive Board discussions of Article IV consultations with member countries, of its surveillance of developments at the regional level, of post-program monitoring, and of ex post assessments of member countries with longer-term program engagements. PINs are also issued after Executive Board discussions of general policy matters, unless otherwise decided by the Executive Board in a particular case.

IMF Executive Board Completes Fourth Review Under ECF Arrangement for Burundi and Approves US$10 Million Disbursement

July 23, 2010 -- The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today completed the fourth review of Burundi’s economic performance under a program supported by the Extended Credit Facility (ECF)1. The Board’s decision enables the government to request a disbursement for an amount equivalent to SDR 6.6 million (about US$10 million), bringing total disbursements to Burundi under the program to an amount equivalent to SDR 33 million (about US$49.9 million). The Executive Board also approved the modification of performance criteria.

The Executive Board also concluded the 2010 Article IV consultation. Details of the findings of the Article IV will be published in a Public Information Notice in due course.

June 4, 2010 - A mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), led by Mr. Bernardin Akitoby, visited Burundi May 11-22, 2010 to conduct the 2010 Article IV Consultation1 and the fourth review of the government’s economic and financial program supported by the IMF under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).

The mission met with President Pierre Nkurunziza; the First Vice-President, Dr. Yves Sahinguvu; the Second Vice-President, Gabriel Ntisezerana; the Minister of Finance, Clotilde Nizigama; and other key Ministers; as well as the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr. Gaspard Sindayigaya. The mission had constructive discussions with members of the donor community and civil society.

IFAD provides Burundi with US$39.6 million to improve food security in rural areas

Rome, 7 May 2010 – The livelihoods of poor rural people have been given a boost thanks to a US$39.6 million grant from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to the Republic of Burundi, the UN rural poverty agency announced today .

The grant agreement was signed today in Rome by Denis Banshimiyubusa, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Burundi to IFAD, and Yukiko Omura, Vice-President of IFAD.

IMF Executive Board Completes Third Review Under ECF Arrangement for Burundi and Approves Disbursement of US$10 Million

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has completed the third review of Burundi's economic performance under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement.1 The completion of the review was on a lapse of time basis,2 effective February 10, 2010, and enabled the immediate disbursement of an amount equivalent to SDR 6.6 million (about US$10.1 million) under the arrangement. This will bring total disbursements under the arrangement to SDR 26.4 million (about US$40.5 million).
