Press Release No. 10/318
August 25, 2010 -- The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved today the sixth review of the Central African Republic (C.A.R.)’s performance under a program supported by the Extended Credit Facility1. The approval will enable the disbursement of an amount equivalent to SDR 8.67 million (about US$13.1 million), bringing total disbursements under the program to an amount equivalent to SDR 69.62 million (about US$104.9 million).
24 August 2010 – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned today that it may have to cut its feeding programme in the Central African Republic (CAR), where tens of thousands risk becoming malnourished unless new funding is secured.
The agency is facing a $15 million shortfall over the next eight months to provide food assistance to some 600,000 people mainly in the conflict-affected northern part of the country.
WFP provides assistance in the eastern regions to 9,100 refugees from Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and 14,000 people forced to flee from their homes due to attacks by the Ugandan rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). In addition, there has been an influx of 17,500 Congolese refugees into the southern Lobaye region since 2009.
16 July 2010 – The protection of 200,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) is an integral element of the peace-building process in the Central African Republic (CAR), a United Nations human rights expert said today following a week-long visit to the country.
“Efforts to build sustainable peace will be weakened as long as entire communities remain displaced and in despair,” said Walter Kaelin, the Secretary-General’s Representative on the human rights of IDPs, calling for the return and reintegration of the uprooted.
Also required in finding durable solutions for IDPs is the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of combatants, he stressed.
During his visit, Mr. Kaelin visited northern CAR, which has been heavily affected by displacement.
16 July 2010 – United Nations Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes today allocated some $41 million in emergency funding to boost humanitarian operations in nine countries where people are suffering the effects of hunger, malnutrition, disease, and conflict.
The money from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will help cover funding gaps in key humanitarian projects in Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Yemen, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Central African Republic (CAR), Djibouti, Eritrea, Republic of Congo and Nepal.
Humanitarian actors in Chad and the DRC received the largest individual portions of some $8 million apiece.

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission, led by Martin Petri, visited the Central African Republic during March 18–31, 2010 to conduct the sixth and last review of the authorities’ program supported by the Extended Credit Facility (ECF).
12 January 2010 – A massive influx of 125,000 refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) into neighbouring Republic of Congo (ROC) and Central African Republic (CAR) after deadly ethnic clashes is severely stretching the meagre resources of the impoverished region, the United Nations refugee agency reported today.
“There is an acute need for formal refugee sites to be established in both CAR and ROC, as the majority of the DRC refugees occupy public buildings and spaces,” UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesman Andrej Mahecic told a news briefing in Geneva, warning that the influx could lead to tensions with the local community.
