Rural poor in Ghana and Nicaragua to benefit from UN-funded projects

28 September 2011 – Thousands of households in Ghana and Nicaragua are set to benefit from projects aimed at building small businesses and enhancing productivity that are funded by the United Nations agency that works to improve the lives of the rural poor.

IMF Executive Board Completes First and Second Reviews Under Ghana’s ECF Arrangement and Approves US$119 Million Disbursement

June 9, 2010 - The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved today the first and second reviews of Ghana’s economic performance under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement. The approval will enable Ghana to draw SDR 81.50 million (US$119 million), bringing total disbursements under the arrangement to SDR149.15 million (US$218 million).

In completing the reviews, the Board granted waivers for the nonobservance of the continuous quantitative performance criterion on the contracting or guaranteeing of nonconcessional external debt and the nonobservance of the September 30, 2009 quantitative performance criterion on the overall budget (fiscal) deficit.

Statement at the Conclusion of an IMF Mission to Ghana

March 26, 2010 -- A mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) led by Peter Allum, visited Accra during March 15-26, 2010. The mission conducted discussions for the first and second reviews under the IMF’s Extended Credit Facility. The mission met with Finance Minister Kwabena Duffuor, Bank of Ghana Governor Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, other senior officials, members of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, and representatives of the private sector, academia, and civil society organizations.

At the end of the mission, Mr. Allum, mission chief for Ghana, issued the following statement:

West African farmers receive boost from UN organic food exporting initiative

9 March 2010 – Some 5,000 West African farmers are reaping the rewards from a United Nations scheme aimed at helping them export produce to the growing organic food market in the industrialized world.

The $2.4 million UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) project has helped farmers in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal and Sierra Leone to meet the necessary certification and adapt to the required methods to grow and sell organic products, according to a FAO news release issued today.

FAO noted that the organic and fair trade market in developed countries is expected to grow by about five to 10 per cent per year over the next three years, offering new opportunities for smallholder farmers in poor countries.
