UN agencies respond to flood emergency in Afghanistan

2 August 2010 – United Nations agencies said today they have begun providing relief assistance to thousands of families in central and eastern Afghanistan, who are affected by the floods that have followed torrential rains in the region

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said it is working with the Afghan Government and other UN agencies and partners to respond to the hygiene, nutrition and primary health needs of up to 4,000 families in the affected regions.

UNICEF has so far provided 430 tents to Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, which border north-western Pakistan, which has also been devastated by floods.

Argentina’s San Juan Province Promotes Social Inclusion with World Bank Support

WASHINGTON DC, March 16th, 2010 – The World Bank Board of Directors approved a US$50 million loan today for the province of San Juan in Argentina, aimed at improving the equity, quality and efficiency of education and health services, as well as making public sector management more efficient.

“San Juan made important achievements in the last few years. It grew at an average of 11% annually since 2003 and has increased its exports five-fold, mainly wine and olive oil. Through this new project, the World Bank accompanies its efforts to transform economic achievements into social ones, mainly in health and education,” said Pamela Cox, World Bank Vice-president for Latin America and the Caribbean.
