IFAD and Viet Nam sign agreement on US$48.3 million loan to support rural development

Rome, 25 February 2011 - The Socialist Republic of Viet Nam and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) today agreed on a US$65 million project to support the government’s new rural development policy, which is aimed at raising living standards in some of Viet Nam’s poorest areas. Under the agreement, Viet Nam’s government and local sources will contribute US$17 million of the funding, with IFAD providing a US$48 million loan and US$ 0.3 million grant for the project, which seeks to enhance implementation effectiveness of the initiative, known as Tam Nong or Resolution 26 on Agriculture, Farmers and Rural Areas.

US$ 19.90 million IFAD loan-grant for economic empowerment of ethnic minorities in Viet Nam

Rome, 9 November 2010 – A new US$19.4 million loan and US$ 0.5 million grant from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam will increase the incomes of poor ethnic minority households in the Dak Nong Province.

The agreement for the Sustainable Economic Empowerment of Ethnic Minorities Project was signed today, in Hanoi, Viet Nam, by Vu Nan Ninh, Minister of Finance of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, and Kanayo F. Nwanze, President of IFAD.

Viet Nam: UN expert urges stepped-up efforts to combat poverty

31 August 2010 – While Viet Nam has made considerable strides in curbing poverty in the past 20 years, efforts must be ramped up to ensure that no one is left behind as the Asian nation continues its economic growth, a United Nations independent human rights expert said today.

Wrapping up a nine-day visit to the country, Magdalena Sepúlveda, the UN Independent Expert on the question of human rights and extreme poverty, stressed that poverty should not be understood purely as an economic issue that can be solved solely by boosting household incomes.

Viet Nam to help Chad bolster food security under UN scheme

26 March 2010 – Vietnamese experts will assist Chad enhance its food security by helping to improve irrigation for rice growing and boosting cereal production under a new scheme backed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Activities that the 15 Vietnamese experts and technicians plan to take part in will also include artisanal fishing and food processing, all of which fall under Chad’s five-year, $200 million National Programme for Food Security, designed with FAO’s assistance.

Vietnam: A Rural Finance Program Targets Women’s Poverty & Social Issues

Bac Giang, 24 March, 2010 — Studies show that when a woman earns money the benefits to the family are greater. Her children are more likely to stay in school longer, they are healthier and the family is better nourished. In a 1998 study in Bangladesh (380kb pdf), for instance, this was documented by measuring children’s height and arm circumference as well as school attendance records.

Throughout the world the success of micro credit programs which target women’s employment has proved an efficient tool for development, particularly in poor rural areas.
